The first grade language arts curriculum comes from a balanced literacy program. Students learn to read through a variety of approaches. Instruction in phonics, phonemic awareness, guided reading, shared reading, independent reading, and poetry are all techniques used throughout the reading program. Art, music, and drama often coordinate with the language arts activities. This approach originates in kindergarten and continues into first grade.
Reading Workshop is the model for the first-grade reading program. It gives students the opportunity to explore books and practice reading strategies daily. Students read independently as well as with partners, meet with the teacher for reading conferences as well as for strategy/small group instruction.
Writing Workshop is the model for the first-grade writing program. Emphasis is placed on the content of writing, with mini-lessons provided to focus on various aspects of the writing process and different writing genres. Students continue to write about things that are meaningful to them, confer with teacher, and begin revising and editing their work. Students are encouraged to share their writing with classmates and give compliments and comments about their work.
Shared Reading allows students to practice book handling skills, directionality, one-to-one matching, punctuation, as well as discussing author/illustrator and story components. Choral reading poetry and known stories help students build reading fluency.
Interactive read-alouds with accountable talk allow students to listen and talk about books, concentrate on using strategies for comprehension and have meaningful conversations about the text.
Interactive Writing allows students to “share the pen” to co-create a text with the teacher. This helps students to practice using correct grammar, handwriting skills, and sentence structure.

First graders are now writing narratives Small Moments. We have begin our unit learning to think and plan out our writing. Students are now able to think of a topic, plan it across the pages and write. While adding details to text and illustrations. They’ll learn that when they come to hard words, instead of being derailed, they can use their word-solving skills to have a go at that word. Everyone is really working hard and doing a great job!!!
